With the year coming to a close, I want to describe what 2024 has meant to me.
First and foremost, 2024 was the year I went from writing a story I dreamed of one day sharing to signing a book deal and reaching that goal so unexpectedly fast that my head is still spinning. As a result, I worked with a publisher, editor, and line editor to turn my story into something better than I could've ever imagined. It was a combined effort designed to bring out the best of what I dreamed up, and I couldn't be happier with the result.
Beyond writing, my wife and I had an incredible time cruising around the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, taking photos and experiencing arctic life in all its beauty. The effects of climate change were on full display, and I doubt few wouldn't be changed after the things we saw. I want to believe there's hope for the future of our environment. Still, with the disturbing outcome of the US election and lack of action from other world leaders, the dystopian future of some of our most popular modern myths seems closer to becoming reality than I'm sure most people want.
But then the new Superman trailer dropped, so at least there's a small sign of hope on the horizon.
I should have the final edit of my novel soon. My publisher is giving it one more read, and a few minor line edits will likely need addressing before it can be considered done. Several ARCs (advanced reader copies) have gone out—with some available to win on Goodreads until 12/31/2024 and The Storygraph until 1/18/2025—and I am excited and terrified to find out what people think.
With the March 4th publication date for The Moon the Sun Forgot approaching, my thoughts have turned to a possible book launch at one of the local bookstores. The literary scene in Calgary is surprisingly rich, and I'd like to do something that not only celebrates my novel but the people and organizations that made its publication possible. My wonderful wife has knit a beautiful scarf inspired by the book cover, and we'll be giving it away at the launch. Details to follow.
Over the holidays, I plan to begin the second draft of the sequel to The Moon the Sun Forgot. The first draft is more-or-less complete, but I've found inspiration and can't wait to make some much needed additions that should make it feel fresh and not simply a continuation of the same story.
In closing, 2024 has been an exciting and unexpected year, and I look forward to what 2025 will bring beyond the obvious. I hope you and your family and friends have a wonderful time this holiday season, and that next year brings you happiness and hope.
Ever forward.
